Senior Night! On Sep. 27 Taft defended in a home game against Westinghouse but Taft had Senior Night to celebrate!
Senior Night is a celebration for the seniors of Taft and a special party just for them. This happened right after the Varsity Football game against Westinghouse. So far the Varsity team is 3-1 over the past four weeks, with a previous win against Amundsen on Sep. 21 with a 21-14 win.
This team has been putting on dominant victories including a 35-7 win at Bremen, 56-6 against Brooks and 21-14 at Amundsen. These three wins have been away games but their only loss this year was 42-7 facing Stevenson. This game was the home debut of the Taft Eagles.
The team has five games left for the regular season before the Playoffs start. This team still has to face Taft’s rivals, Lane Tech on Oct. 12 protecting the fort. Make sure to show up in your Taft gear and help the team take down Lane Tech!
When asked about the work ethic of this team, Coach Zachary Elder said, “The guys have been putting in practice since June. All the guys have been doing their all in games and practice and I expect them to continue.” He added, “All the guys have been making an impact, and I don’t see it stopping.”
Senior Martin Deane (Lineman) also has his opinions about Senior Night, “I feel like we can easily win this because of all the specialized drills and training this week.” When asked about who’s put in the most work this season he responded, “Mainly the two way guys. Like Kuba, who plays receiver and corner.”
Fellow senior Kuba Wierzchowiak (Wide Receiver and Cornerback), had this to say about the game, “The team feels good, we’ve been rolling through teams this season.” After being asked about the team this year he responded, “We’ve had problems with holding and celebrating after plays this year, we gotta cut down on that.”
After senior night, which Taft won 34-8 it was a very open and shut case with touchdowns coming from multiple players including over 50 tackles, five of them being tackles for loss, from this team and 419 offensive all purpose yards.
Kuba Wierzchowiak had 51 all purpose yards and a touchdown on the offensive side of the ball. On the defensive he was more explosive, creating five total tackles with two tackles for loss. Logan Roman (Junior, Quarterback), had 7/10 completions for 130 yards in the air also creating three touchdown passes for his team.
Steven Carrera (Senior, Running back & Free Safety) had 14 rushes for a total of 189 rushing yards and a touchdown. He also was able to get two receptions for 20 yards. Malik Mahamid (Junior and Defensive Lineman) was able to produce 2 sacks pushing them back 13 yards, and 6 total tackles in this game.
Taft’s win brings them to 5-1, which they got after winning a close game against Phillips, and next up they have their rival, Lane Tech.
