Fetch is a slang word stemming from the 2004 movie “Mean Girls.” It’s a term that means awesome or cool. Using the term Fetch captures the essence of life as a teenage girl. I want to bring this term back because it is fun, positive, and the way it became popular was relatable. Fetch is a term that addresses female empowerment and highlights societal pressures teenage girls endure in hopes of fitting in.
Being a teenage girl is hard; it always has been, and even now women’s rights are being taken less and less seriously. Fetch celebrates the different aspects of girlhood and gives inspiration to other young girls that they have the power to influence language and culture, and are given the opportunity to define their own identities.
Letting girls decide the social norms instead of being pigeonholed into negative stereotypes will help limit how women are portrayed in the media. Fetch is an encouraging way to show support in something. It deserves to be brought back! Fetch is a positive, and uplifting reminder of the light at the end of the tunnel, that one day women will be seen, heard, and thought of without having to prove they are more than capable of anything they put their minds to.
