Recently, WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) made a deal with Netflix so that “Monday Night Raw” would stream exclusively on Netflix. They will also keep their deal with Peacock to stream Premium Live Events.
“Monday Night Raw” has been WWE’s flagship show, being WWE’s second longest running show only behind the coveted “Wrestlemania,” which started Jan. 11, 1993 and hasn’t stopped since. Recently it has taken a backseat to “Smackdown” due to its “bloodline” storyline and the man power it had but now that power has been shipped back to Raw.
WWE and Netflix made a ten year, five billion dollar deal to have “Monday Night Raw” stream exclusively on Netflix. This deal has made many fans happy but has also upset just as many. Having to pay two different subscriptions just to know what’s truly going on in the WWE world.
According to WWE themselves, they reached 4.9 millions viewers on the debut show on Netflix. According to “Fightful,” over the past five years, Raw has been consistently getting around two million viewers each year, showing the bigger screen has brought in a bigger audience.
Jonathan Cohen, a Drama teacher at Taft, made his comments on the expansion to Netflix, “It’ll help bring the company to mainstream media more than it already has and what they’re trying to do.” When asked about the authenticity of the product, he responded, “That’s what they were doing anyway, there’s still gonna be storylines and an act but it’s gonna still be real on a level, like real sports.”
Oliver Rosendo, a senior at Taft, made his comments on this, “It’ll help the company very much, they’re trying to have people watch more WWE and be more promoted.”
Ethan Freire, a junior at Taft, had a more business minded comment on this, “It makes the WWE a more desirable spot to be in more than it already is, it’ll drive wrestlers like Penta and Andrade back to WWE.”
This deal will hopefully be a great move for WWE and increase the market for all of those to watch WWE.
