Daredevil: Born Again
Lawyer by day, vigilante by night. This motto is attributed to one of Marvel’s most sinful and distinctive characters, one who’s just finished a successful first season for his newest show. “Daredevil: Born Again” has garnered a lot of attention and positive reviews, but the show ended on April 15. That only leaves one major question. What happens next?
The original “Daredevil” show premiered on April 10, 2015 and went on to have three seasons and multiple fan accolades. To this day, it’s still considered one of the best shows Marvel has ever produced. It’s dark, gritty, violent, and isn’t afraid to bring up sensitive topics such as the extreme Catholic guilt Matt Murdock seems to carry.
“It actually felt like the comics,” said junior Neveah Anderson. “It doesn’t try to make the story overly funny, it focuses on the darker parts that actually shape the characters. That’s what made the show so good.”
The title “lawyer by day, vigilante by night” comes from Murdock’s literal double life; he serves as a criminal defense attorney with his best friend Foggy Nelson while simultaneously hunting down criminals with his heightened senses and intense martial arts training (with some boxing influences from his father.)
The number one villain crossing Daredevil’s path is Wilson Fisk, also known as the crimelord Kingpin. He’s strong, cunning, and constantly having his plans thwarted by Matt. The two have a lot of history, most of which is explored in both Daredevil shows.
“Born Again” season one’s first half focuses on Matt’s attempt to live without the Daredevil persona after failing to save Foggy’s life during the premiere. Despite his more upscale firm and seemingly decent life, he’s ridden with guilt until a temporary villain and corruption gives him a reason to go back to the vigilante role.
The show always carried a realistic element, but it’s shown to be much more prevalent in “Born Again.” With the anti-vigilante task force to a convicted felon gaining power through a political office, it fails to make viewers forget about very real and relevant events due to its blunt demonstration of it.
Considering the past few shows Disney has made and its light-hearted tone, it was an unlikely move to switch up despite Daredevil’s reputation in the MCU. It certainly proves to be a surprising move for Disney, but it makes one wonder if the pattern will continue into the next season.
“Honestly, I think it’s a high possibility just based off the last episode,” said homeschooled junior Ethan Vale.
Vale continued, “It shows the comparison between Fisk and Trump, I mean both are criminals in office. I also personally think the realism in the show is what makes it great, so I hope it rolls into the next season.”
Due to Daredevil’s overall nature, along with most of the side characters, it’s very likely the politics will remain just as strong. This especially applies to Fisk’s new regime as not only Mayor of New York, but as the reinstated crime lord Kingpin. There’s definitely a chance the Punisher will return as well, considering his importance in the post-credit scene.
The show is already renewed for a second season, with the filming officially starting on the day of the first season’s release. Based on rumors and leaked set photos, it’s shaping up to be a relatively interesting season with missing posters for Matt and Karen Page having a bigger role.
“For me, it felt like the show focused more on Matt compared to him being Daredevil, especially since he lost Foggy and he didn’t return to being Daredevil for a while,” said junior Nya McDonald.
“I also liked all the secrets with Kingpin and Vanessa, I hope we find out more about it and Vanessa in general since she hired Bullseye to take out Foggy.”
In general, the first season turned out to be widely accepted and praised by the Marvel community, which sets decently high hopes for the second one. The finale left viewers to wonder about many possibilities, but fans will have to wait until next year.
