Mental health isn’t ‘drama’ and it’s really happening.
Mental health conditions can affect anyone, regardless of gender, age, race, ethnicity, or income level. We should not say the word ‘drama’ just because we see or know someone that is crying or depressed.
In the website “guardian.com,” young women seeking mental health help are called ‘dramatic,’ UK survey finds (Hussen, Dahaba Ali, 2023). It includes that, “A fifth of young women who have sought help for their mental health say they were told they were being ‘dramatic.’” (Hussen, Dahaba Ali, 2023). It provides an insight of how a person was getting judged when they were asking for some help. This can cause a person to not seek for some help because they were being judged of what they were feeling. We have to be thoughtful of other people because everyone is going through something and we should help them when they ask for some help.
Think before you say something because one word can make someone’s feelings hurt. Validating and evaluating each other’s emotions can help us understand each other’s situations. It can also make it easier for us to open up our problems to someone if we know that someone was validating our feelings and not judging us for what we feel.
Even though some people may claim that they’re being too dramatic and consider it as drama, I believe that they’re depressed and they need clinical medication. Based on my own experience, I know some people who were actually depressed. They’re having a hard time to ask for some help because they’re scared that they might get called “dramatic” or weak
From nimh.gov, 59.3 million adults experienced any mental illness. There were also an estimated 15.4 million adults aged 18 or older in the U.S. with serious mental illness (National Institute of Mental Health, 2024.) How about today? I’m pretty sure that there’s an increase in people who experienced AMI and SMI because of social media.
Mental health is important because having good mental health makes life easier, but having good mental health does not always mean feeling good all the time. All of us have ups and downs in life and our affection matters, if you have mental health problems or you know anyone that has mental health problems, don’t be scared to seek some help.
In samhsa.gov psychiatrists said, “that many of us are not okay, but it’s important to acknowledge and address that, and make sure people know that help is available” (Everett, Anita, 2024.) We must be aware of our actions and of the words we say to someone because we don’t know what they’ve been going through.
We ought to consider each other’s feelings. We can check each other by asking if they’re okay or not. If they’re not okay, then we have to make them feel that they can talk to you anytime. All of us need someone to talk to and to let our problems out.
Having a mental health illness is normal. You’re not alone in this world; there are also other people that are going through something. We have to talk about mental health together to empower people to seek the help they need.
Do you know why “It’s okay to not be okay?” Let me inform you that you’re a human and your feelings are valid. Allow yourself to accept true emotions because once you avoid this, it might grow and make you feel overwhelmed.
Always remember that it’s okay to not be okay today or even tomorrow. We all need affirmation.
