It’s official! The 2024 Grammy nominations were revealed, and music enthusiasts have been talking. This year’s Grammys, which will be held live on Sunday, Feb. 4, will include some pretty strong contenders for the major categories, and a wide variety of artists that will divide viewers.

Although the Grammys have an extensive list of categories artists can win, the ones many people anticipate are the four biggest awards. These include the categories of ‘Best New Artist,’ Song of the Year,’ ‘Record of the Year,’ and ‘Album of the Year.’ These categories are also known as the ‘Big Four.’

The official Grammy website goes through all the categories, their nominees, and the category’s significance. The first big category is Best New Artist of the Year, which is awarded to one fresh face artist, who had a major come up in the past year and was able to gain tons of traction with their talents.

Nominees for this category include Coco Jones, Gracie Abrams, Fred Again, Ice Spice, Jelly Roll, Noah Kahan, Victoria Monét, and The War and Treaty. The artist from the Artist of the Year category who is most anticipated to win, says many Taft students, is rapper Ice Spice.

“There is no doubt that Ice Spice is most definitely going to win. From the list of artists nominated for being the best new artist this year, no one else stands out besides Ice Spice. She made a huge impact on the music industry this year,” said Nadia Richards, Taft senior.

The next major category on the list is Song of the Year. This award is given to the songwriters of the chosen song, and is judged solely based on the composition of the song.

Nominees will include Billie Eilish – What Was I Made For? [From the Motion Picture “Barbie”], Dua Lipa – Dance the Night (From Barbie the Album), Jon Batiste – Butterfly, Lana Del Rey – A&W, Miley Cyrus – Flowers, Olivia Rodrigo – Vampire, SZA – Kill Bill, and Taylor Swift – Anti-Hero. Most anticipated winner(s) are Lana Del Rey, Taylor Swift, SZA, or Oliva Rodrigo.

Next category at the Grammys is Record of the Year. Record of the Year is awarded to the artist and the production team of a single song. Record of the year.

Nominees include, Billie Eilish – What Was I Made For? [From the Motion Picture “Barbie”], Boygenius – Not Strong Enough, Jon Batiste – Worship, Miley Cyrus – Flowers, Olivia Rodrigo – Vampire, SZA – Kill Bill, Taylor Swift – Anti-Hero, Victoria Monét – On My Mama.

“There are so many popular artists nominated for Record of the Year. I don’t know who is going to win, it can be anyone from Taylor Swift to SZA, so it’s going to be exciting to see who’s going to win, it’ll be a surprise anyway it goes,” said Gustavo Maldonado, Taft senior.

The last big category is Album of the Year. This is awarded to the artist, songwriters, and the production team for the album as a whole.

The nominees for Album of the Year are Boygenius – The Record, Janelle Monáe – The Age of Pleasure, Jon Batiste – World Music Radio, Lana Del Rey – Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd, Miley Cyrus – Endless Summer Vacation, Olivia Rodrigo – Guts, SZA – SOS, and Taylor Swift – Midnights.

“Many great albums came out this year, and I feel that the Grammys are covering the majority of the popular ones, but do think there should be a bit more diversity between categories in who is nominated, but do think that each nominee deserves the recognition,” said Skylar Daquiante, Taft junior.

There are many great artists being represented in the nominee pool, and many artists that are found in more than one category. The Grammys, which are airing Sunday, Feb. 4, 2024, are sure to be a night of many surprises and top tier entertainment. Be sure to tune in and start making predictions!
