In 1988, the world got their first look into a movie that would become significant in movie history due to its spin on the afterlife as well as significant in Tim Burton’s work. On Sep. 6, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” was released in theaters and has so far been both a downer and big hit.
With most movies there are going to be people who like it and don’t, this movie definitely came with a lot of mixed feelings. “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” features actors who worked in the previous movie as well as new cast members, such as Michael Keaton who plays
Beetlejuice in both movies, along with Winona Ryder and Jenna Ortega who play the mother-daughter duo.
The new movie along with many others as of late has a very slow beginning, it goes through the characters’ lives and backgrounds. It’s not until you are 50 Minutes into the movie that the plot starts to form and even then it was very rushed. There was a very quick enter into the climax and resolution, There was no slow burn or build up of suspense.
Joshua Bassig, a Taft High School sophomore, said, “I feel like they used the same story for the nostalgic feeling but they didn’t do a good job. Probably just a money grab because a lot of people like the Beetlejuice movie and would go watch it. I don’t normally fall asleep during movies but I did fall asleep during that.”
This student expressed the lack of entertainment and plot grab from the movie to the point where he fell asleep, he felt that it could really just be for the money rather than to relive the original movie. Aidan Hauad, a Taft High School sophomore, stated, “They shouldn’t have done a remake.” Many feel this movie made no sense as well as didn’t live up to the name it was given.
Tim Burton has been at the front of many family favorites and classics such as “Dumbo,” “Corpse Bride,” “Alice in Wonderland,” and “Frankenweenie,” so for the new “Beetlejuice” movie to not be what would be expected can be a let down to Tim Burton and “Beetlejuice” lovers. However the casting has not been found to be an issue amongst the student body.
Sophia Anderson, a Taft High School junior, said, “I liked the casting, I liked that they kept some of the original cast for the new movie.” This student along with others have expressed that they like the casting they choose for the movie and liked their choice to include some of the original actors.
Even though there are mixed feelings in the air about the new movie, many were for Micheal Keaton playing Beetlejuice again because he is the original and knows how to play him the right way. Hauad said, “Beetlejuice is funny and hysterical, I love the actor and he’s just amazing.”
