There are many ways by which the school can be improved, such as more higher level classes and more opportunities for students. However I’m here to debate regarding different improvements that can be controversial but working for many. I believe that the school could start later than it starts now, possibly 1 hour later.
This can contribute to better attendance during the first periods and would allow students to have more time in order to get to school. It would also improve things such as better sleep schedule, concentration of students on education and stress.
Schedules can be flexible and can be different from region to region. English teacher Maria Asvos mentioned based on her 1st period attendance that the school should start on block based schedules, meaning that the school may start at 7:45 for some students but could be 6:45 or 8:45 for others.
Asvos said via email, “This can also work for seniors who have work after school, this can be used as consideration for High School since colleges have college programs for different times.” A later schedule can also be beneficial to students who have difficulties with transportation in the morning.
Asvos also mentioned, “Because of the flexibility with schedules, it would also solve the hallway congestion issues during passing periods, by having student classes at different times.”
I do agree with this idea, and I think that this should be implemented. It would add many positive benefits to the students but can also be a result of many issues. It would also fix traffic issues that occur after and before the school starts, there would be less cars in specific time due to students starting at different times of the day.
On the other hand there is the perspective of senior student, Alina Bileichuk. Via email she provided her opinion in regards to the current schedule and she believes that the school should definitely begin later. Bileichuk said, l “It is difficult for me to get ready on time as I wake at 5:30, I do not get enough sleep.”
Bileuchuk adds that if the school would start later it could contribute to many benefits. Such as students being more awake, less traffic due to students going to school without people who go to their work, students wouldn’t go to school during the days when it’s still dark outside.
In addition, She said that there are negatives to the current schedule such as, “Lack of sleep, regardless of students going to sleep earlier they will still mostly likely have difficulties waking up in the morning.” Stress, overcrowded traffic, possible sleep during class, issues in regards to education due to less sleep.
Bileichuk believes that the perfect start time for school would be around 8:30, as students would be able to get more sleep, less traffic and generally it would be easier for students to focus on their class.
I do agree that school should start later, around 8:30 – 8:45. But I also believe that the classes may be shortened by 3 – 5 minutes, this will require changes on how classes are going. This can be beneficial to students who do want school to start later but also end in the same if they got outside activities of school such as clubs, work or others.
