It’s about that time of year again where students have to pick their classes for next year. freshmen and juniors pick their electives for next year, seniors are finding their colleges, and sophomores, well, they have to pick what path they take for junior and senior year.
Thursday, Nov. 28 was Sophomore Parent Programming Kickoff (Parent Night). It’s a night where upcoming juniors and their parents got background information about the IB pathways offered at Taft.
“The transition from sophomore to junior year is a particularly important one. Students at Taft have different IB pathways to consider when they are thinking about what courses to choose… some students will be in the full IB Diploma Programme, and some students will be in the IB Career-related Programme,” said Tanya Bateson, an IB Coordinator, via email.
The evening started by sophomores and their families being checked in and getting a sheet of paper that gave them a breakout group for later. The families were directed to the auditorium for an overview presentation of the breakout groups and about Lang & Lit classes.
Then, the Families went to their breakout rooms in The Forum, The Nest, The Auditorium, and Room 152. In their breakout rooms, they learned about one of the IB pathways.
“The IB student panel during the Parent Night made the courses seem more manageable. Many of the students talked about the teachers and other students and how helpful they are whenever you need help so if you’re struggling there are people you could always turn to,” said Hanna Florczak, a sophomore, via email.
One of the breakout rooms was for IBCP. David Fingado, IBCP Coordinator said, “We’re super excited for CP, we’re excited for Engineering and Education; two new pathways starting next year.”
Sophomore Parent Programming Kickoff helped the class of 2027 gain a better understanding of what pathways in IB they can go into next year.
