On April 9, my mom and I went to go see the Chicago Cubs and Texas Rangers meet up in Wrigley Field for the final game of their three game series. The Cubs held a two nothing lead on the series, then looking for a series sweep against the 2023 World Series Champions.
It was a windy 40 degree day. After having some trouble with tickets and buying some ice cream and hot chocolate, we were able to sit in the bleachers with my mom’s friends and watch the game.
Coming into the game the Cubs were 9-5, coming off a series win against the San Diego Padres. The Rangers at this time were 8-4 who swept the visiting Tampa Bay Rays.
The game started off hot with Corey Seager hitting a solo home run to get the Rangers up early, Michael Busch would score Seiya Suzuki after Suzuki hit a triple. Scoring would continue in the top of the fifth, with left handed pitcher, Shota Imanaga letting up four more being headlined by Jonah Heim’s two run home run.
Morale was pretty low for the team and fans during that inning, but we all were hoping for a Cubs retaliation, however, Tyler Mahle was lights out for the Rangers that night, pitching seven innings of one run ball resulting in a win and Luke Jackson ending the game with a final of 6-2, tagging Imanaga with his first loss of the season. Corey Seager was crowned with player of the game with two solo home runs in the game.
Softball Coach and Yearbook teacher Kelly Watson was able to speak on the Cubs success and failures over the past couple years, “I feel like there were better options for the Cubs to take instead of Kyle Tucker, Phil Epstein (Chicago Cubs Owner) has had some successes so far this season but it was really tough to deal with the last couple years and the rebuild of the Cubs.”
Starting Pitcher for Taft’s baseball team and Cubs fan James Fasuna explained his connection with his dad over baseball, “My dad got me into baseball, he’s got way more experience than me but we go down a few games a year and watch the Cubs play in Wrigley Field. We go home and watch the games together after school.”
IB Language and Literature teacher Brooke Clark, who is a Rangers fan, talked about her baseball and Texas Rangers love, “I got into baseball because of my love for (Second Baseman) Ian Kinsler and (Shortstop) Michael Young. Watching them play was awesome for me as a kid.” Clark continued, “We couldn’t have won the 2023 World Series without the duo of (Second Baseman) Marcus Semien and (Shortstop) Corey Seager.”
Alas, the Cubs ended the day with a loss, making them 9-6 on the year, but they ultimately won the series against the Rangers. They then went on to face against the Los Angeles Dodgers at their home.
